For over 30 years, Gary Simmons has probed film, architecture, and American popular culture to create works that explore personal and collective experiences of race and class. In his most recent paintings, Simmons returns to the racist cartoons that first appeared in his early chalkboard drawings and were once prevalent in American visual culture.
In 'The Milk Shake' (2023), Simmons draws from the Looney Tunes franchise’s first cartoon characters, Bosko and Honey, which were directly inspired by minstrel shows. Drawing from an image of Bosko running the counter at a soda fountain, Simmons depicts a close-cropped detail of a hand extending a large milkshake, blurred through his unique process of erasure. In juxtaposing the sweetness of ice cream with the violence inherent to racial stereotyping, Simmons conjures a sense of nostalgia for the innocence of childhood while simultaneously alluding to the historical significance of lunch counter sit-ins during the civil rights movement.
