As the title affirms, ‘MADE IN MEXICO’ (2016) was painted during Henry Taylor’s one-year residency at the Museo Taller José Clemente Orozco in Guadalajara, within the historic home of the eminent muralist. Taylor’s scene, full of empathy and a pursuit of truth, is not only a composite of images and sources he collected, but also a synthesis of his exchanges and friendships over the course of that year—as shown by the inclusion of the artists Bruno Gruppalli and Eduardo Sarabia, depicted on the left.
Centered by a cook, ‘MADE IN MEXICO’ presents an interplay of figures as pieces of the larger cultural narrative they represent, and these chosen subjects reveal forces at play, both individualistic and societal. With a guiding sense of human connection, Taylor layers his observations in Mexico through multifaceted narratives and imagined possibilities.

‘FROM SUGAR TO SHIT’

This summer, Los Angeles-based artist Henry Taylor traveled to Paris where he set up a temporary studio ahead of his exhibition ‘FROM SUGAR TO SHIT’ inaugurating our new gallery in the city. Throughout his four-decade career, Taylor has consistently and simultaneously embraced and rejected the tenets of traditional painting—as well as any formal label—combining figurative, landscape and history painting, alongside drawing, installation and sculpture. Encompassing the remarkable breadth of his practice, ‘FROM SUGAR TO SHIT’ debuts new works by the artist and coincides with the arrival of a major career survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

About the artist

Born in 1958 in Ventura, California, Henry Taylor draws on a wide range of subjects to create a deeply personal visual language that is simultaneously grounded in history and the present moment. Culling from his cultural landscape in a process he calls ‘hunting and gathering,’ Taylor’s art embraces both the immediate imagery of objects or sitters and personal or shared histories. Taylor has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in the United States and internationally, and his work is in prominent public collections around the world. In 2018, Taylor was the recipient of The Robert De Niro, Sr. Prize in 2018 for his outstanding achievements in painting. Taylor’s work was presented at the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York NY in 2017 and 58th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy in 2019.
